A rabbit-resistant garden fence begins with the right structure at the right height - and with careful attention to the bottom edge.
The clean white SnapFence® Trellis frame gives the garden a finished four-foot structure. The compatible wire mesh selected separately provides the actual small-opening barrier. Those two jobs should never be confused.
That is why the best rabbit-garden plan starts with the four-foot No-Dig Trellis Fence, not seven-inch Landscape Edging or the approximately 17-inch decorative Garden Border Fence. The lower products are designed to define landscaping; they are not substitutes for a full garden barrier.
The Frame and the Wire Mesh Do Different Jobs
SnapFence® is a modular PVC frame system. It is not a pre-filled fence panel. The Trellis kit provides the posts, rails, ground stakes, connectors, caps, and other frame hardware needed to create the white structure.
Lattice, hardware cloth, welded wire, garden wire, or similar compatible wire mesh is selected and purchased separately. For rabbit resistance, the mesh opening and the way the lower edge is secured are more important than choosing a decorative open lattice by itself.
Choose Mesh for the Animals and Conditions in Your Area
Iowa State University Extension recommends mesh openings of one inch or smaller for rabbit exclusion and notes that two-foot fencing is often adequate for home gardens. It also recommends pinning the lower edge tightly to the ground or burying the bottom one to two inches so rabbits cannot crawl underneath.
Local rabbit species, snow depth, soil, slopes, gates, and nearby cover can change what works. Choose compatible wire material intended for outdoor use, follow the mesh manufacturer’s instructions, and use local Extension or wildlife guidance when conditions are unusual.
No garden barrier should be advertised as guaranteed rabbit-proof. A more accurate goal is a properly planned rabbit-resistant boundary that helps protect vulnerable plants.
Practical rabbit-barrier starting point
Use small-opening compatible wire mesh, keep the lower edge tight to the soil, inspect gates and corners for openings, and recheck the perimeter after watering, storms, settling, or animal activity.
Choose No Gate or Coordinated Gate Access
Use the 12-foot by four-foot no-gate Trellis frame for a continuous garden run. Use the 14-foot 8-inch by four-foot frame-and-gate system where regular walk-through access is needed.
For a gated layout, establish and install the gate location first, then build the surrounding fence sections outward. The gate components are included with the with-gate system. Lattice or compatible wire mesh for the gate and fence sections is sold separately.
Install the Frame the Q.U.I.C.K.™ Way
The in-ground Trellis system uses ground stakes, a cordless drill, and an auger bit instead of traditional post-hole digging or concrete setting.
Drill. Create the first ground location with the auger bit.
Drive. Install the first ground stake and establish the line.
Slide. Slide the PVC post over the stake.
Finish. Repeat one section at a time, add the selected compatible wire mesh, and inspect the complete perimeter.
Let the Protection Become Part of the Landscape
A wire-mesh garden fence does not have to remain the visual focus. Flowers can be planted along the base. Hedges can soften the boundary. Suitable climbing vines can grow around open sections while the white frame continues to create a clean finished outline.
Protection now. Natural beauty over time. The wire mesh can become less noticeable as the landscaping matures, while the garden boundary remains in place.
Before You Build, Check the Entire Perimeter
- Measure the garden and decide exactly where access is required.
- Choose compatible wire mesh with openings appropriate for rabbits and the other animals in your area.
- Plan how the lower edge will be pinned, buried, or otherwise secured according to the mesh and site instructions.
- Inspect corners, gate edges, slopes, and changes in grade for gaps.
- Confirm local rules, underground utilities, irrigation, and soil conditions before drilling.
- Reinspect the barrier periodically because soil and landscape conditions change.
